1996 - "CULTURE OF THE SEAS"

A trip through the cities and countries of the Mediterranean

Music, Dance, Theatre, Cinema, Visual Arts

The Culture of the Seas project is the outcome of deep reflection on some of the aspects that lie at the very heart of our culture, whose Mediterranean roots appear ever more evident as study and critical analysis proceed.
The first aspect under consideration could not be but immagination and myth: imagination, that original seed to every human "invention"; myth, a summary of the collective memory and of the fundamental ethical imagination priciples. But, apart from travelling with his imagination, man does materially travel taking with him his culture, his experience and his abilities just as the products he creates. He leaves his mark, he moulds the landscape, he changes it to his needs. What he leaves behind sometimes disappears; sometimes it is changed by those who follow in his wake, changing as times change; other times it remains intact.
We, men of the present, stand before these realities that (whatever their form) in their very being there force us to confront them. They cannot and they must not be relegated to a museum, into a history book or a photograph. Sometimes it is their very outdateness that forces us to reflect and to think once again about our doings. Starting from these considerations, and during the initial discussion with local Bodies and operators, some hypothetical themes have been drawn up. Each city bears a main theme which is characteristic of it.

The project will be implemented through four successive pahses and will be so divided: drawing up of a programme at local level, each province and city will draw up (individually) a programme devoted to a theme linked to its specific history and cultural heritage; exchange, the participating cities will "exchange" some of the performances designed and implemented at local level; presentation of a common comprehensive programme, all programmes drawn up at local level will be presented within the framework of a common festival which will take place in Syracuse; creation of a network of contacts and of centres interested in the planning of cultural activity and located in other Mediterranean countries historycally and/or culturally linked with the participating Italian provinces.
The implementation of the project will be concomitant with the Italian Presidency of the European Union and will be continued into 1997.

Witness of Times

The programme of this part of the project aims at pinpointing the widely diversified multiplicity of the historical and artistic features and manifestations which have taken shape in Sardinia from the Middle Ages up to the present day.
La Spezia - Creativity and Creation
The programme focuses on contemporary culture and in particular on the new generations of artists and on the figure of two protagonists of the culture of our century: Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Eugenio Montale.
SYRACUSE - Sound and Space and the Stage City
Besides a series of concerts the programme will present a number of exhibitions proposed by the renown International Centre of Research on the Baroque in Sicily. It will concentrate on three different thematic guidelines, each one characterized by very well defined features as for its relation to artistic wealth and cultural history. Common and main theme of the programme will be: the Baroque as element characterizing the city.
Basilicata - Civilization in their environmental context
a synthesis of the interaction existing between the artistic context and the natural context. A special attention will be devoted to the adoption of instruments (such as the guitar) traditionally used by the Mediterranean populations acting within their environment.
Scicli-FESTA DELLE MILIZIE
BARI- Mousik, the Art of Muses
Bari and Apulia have always been characterized by a bent for a Mediterranean cultural background. In fact, for thousands of years the whole region has played a central role as pivotal crossroads between East and West. Throughout the centuries Bari and its surrounding area have been influenced directly by the ancient Greek civilization and later by the Roman and the Byzantine ones. In the Middle Ages Bari was the last European halting place for Crusaders on their journey to the Holy Land.
TRIESTE-City of cities, Gate to Europe
Pescara-Intertwining of Arts
In the framework of the programme two significative figures of the contemporary culture will be presented: Gabriele d'Annunzio and Ennio Flaniano.Within the European framework of the project the province of Pescara will concentrate on finding a contact and implementing an exchange with the most modern cities of the Mediterranean area.
